My Favorite Qualitative Research Finds

In the vast realm of education research, the use of qualitative methodologies adds depth, context, and a nuanced understanding to the complexities of human experiences in learning environments. As an avid enthusiast of qualitative research, I find immense joy in delving into the diverse tapestry of methodologies that contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of educational studies. In this blog post, we embark on a fascinating exploration of various qualitative research methods, each offering unique insights into the intricate fabric of education.

Autoethnography

   One of the methodologies that captivates me is autoethnography, a deeply personal approach that intertwines the researcher's lived experiences with broader cultural contexts. This method allows for a rich exploration of personal narratives, fostering a deeper understanding of how individual stories intersect with broader educational themes.

Sounding Empirical, Staying Cosmopolitan

This reflective essay traces my evolving relationship with qualitative research traditions, moving from familiar interpretive frameworks toward more empirical approaches through Schreier and Mayring. Framed by a grounded cosmopolitanism that “chases butterflies without a net” (Hansen, 2010), it explores how methodological negotiation becomes an ethical practice of survival, critique, and care within Asian EFL research contexts.

Action Research

Action research, with its focus on solving real-world problems within educational settings, resonates with my passion for making a tangible impact. This iterative process of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting empowers educators to actively participate in improving their practice and, consequently, enhancing the learning experiences of their students.

Multimodal Discourse Analysis

   In our visually-dominated world, multimodal discourse analysis becomes increasingly relevant. This methodology investigates the interplay of various modes of communication, such as images, text, and gestures, shedding light on the complex ways in which meaning is constructed and conveyed in educational settings.

Intimate Inquiry

   Intimate inquiry places a strong emphasis on fostering deep connections and understanding within educational research. This approach allows researchers to engage intimately with the subjects of their study, recognizing the significance of personal relationships in the learning process.

Case Study

   The depth and detail afforded by case study methodologies appeal to my desire for a comprehensive exploration of specific educational phenomena. By closely examining individual cases, researchers can uncover rich insights that contribute to broader educational theories and practices.

Grounded Theory

   Grounded theory, with its systematic approach to data analysis and theory development, provides a structured yet flexible framework for exploring and understanding educational phenomena. This method resonates with my appreciation for rigorous research grounded in empirical evidence.

Ethnography

   Ethnography, a classic qualitative research method, invites researchers to immerse themselves in the culture of educational settings. By observing and participating in the day-to-day activities, ethnographers gain a deep understanding of the social dynamics that shape learning environments.

Phenomenology

   The philosophical underpinnings of phenomenology align with my interest in exploring the subjective experiences of individuals in education. This method seeks to understand the essence of phenomena as perceived by those directly involved, offering a unique perspective on educational realities.

Oral History

   Oral history brings a human touch to education research by capturing personal narratives and firsthand accounts. This methodology allows for the preservation of diverse voices, ensuring that the stories of individuals within educational contexts are heard and valued.

Narrative Inquiry

    Narrative inquiry invites researchers to explore the stories people tell about their educational experiences. By examining the narratives that shape individuals' understanding of learning, this method provides a powerful lens through which to comprehend the multifaceted nature of education.

Historical Studies

    A journey into the past through historical studies helps contextualize present educational practices. By tracing the evolution of educational systems, researchers can identify patterns, challenges, and successes that contribute to a deeper understanding of the field.

Arts-Based Research

    The intersection of arts and education is a realm that sparks my curiosity. Arts-based research allows for creative expression and interpretation, opening new avenues for exploring and representing educational phenomena through various artistic mediums.

Asia-as Method

Asia-as-Method is an intellectual framework that seeks to use Asian experiences, knowledge, and perspectives as a basis for generating new theoretical insights and methodologies, challenging Western-centric viewpoints and promoting a more pluralistic understanding of global issues.

Korea-as-Method

Korea-as-Method is an approach that uses Korean historical, cultural, and social experiences as a foundation for developing new theoretical frameworks and methodologies, challenging dominant Western paradigms and contributing to a more diversified global discourse.

Gwangju-as-Method

Gwangju-as-Method is a place-based approach that draws on Gwangju’s histories of resistance, care, and relationality to offer educators and researchers a grounded alternative to dominant, universalist frameworks.
