Exploring Theoretical Landscapes: Navigating Educational Perspectives

Welcome to the debut Theoretical Threads, a storehouse of theories on the KoreaMaria Literacy, Culture, and Language Education blog. This series is a space to think with theory; to trace, trouble, and transform the ideas that shape how we teach, learn, and live in relation.

Here I’ll be drawing from a wide-ranging tapestry of educational theories, weaving them into my ongoing work as a teacher, researcher, and cultural worker. Rather than seeking tidy answers, this series embraces theory as a tool for reflection, disruption, and connection. Whether you’re an educator, a scholar, or a curious reader navigating the edges of practice and possibility, I invite you to explore with me.

Unveiling the Theoretical Mosaic

Our exploration begins with an array of theoretical lenses that resonate with my intellectual curiosity. Join me as we traverse through the thought-provoking realms of:

Participatory Paradigm for Qualitative Research

The participatory paradigm is a transformative research framework rooted in collaboration, co-construction, and action—offering a powerful fit for language education and qualitative inquiry.

Constructivism

Constructivism has provided a pedagogical home for my belief that meaningful learning happens when students actively engage with content, challenge assumptions, and co-construct knowledge.

Social Justice Education

Dedicated to fostering equity and dismantling systemic inequalities, social justice education is a beacon guiding our efforts to create inclusive learning environments. I'll share my different 'readers' over the years on social justice theorists like Freire, Shor, hooks and Delpit.

Reading Gender in Rebellion: A Personal Theory Zine

An exploration of theoretical lenses laying out why androgyny matters across time. Frameworks of fluidity explored include: Performance (Butler); Camp (Sontag); Disidentification (Muñoz); Hyperreality (Baudrillard); Biopower (Foucault); and Counter-hegemony (Gramsci) as well as others.

Decolonizing Education

A critical examination of educational practices that acknowledges and challenges colonial legacies. Together, we'll unravel the complexities of decolonization, contemplating how it can reshape educational paradigms and empower learners to connect with their histories and cultures.

Critical Sociocultural Theory

Grounded in the belief that learning is a social and cultural activity, critical sociocultural theory prompts us to question existing norms and power structures. Prepare for insightful discussions on how this theory can shape pedagogical approaches in diverse educational settings.

Critical Race Theory

In the pursuit of understanding and dismantling racism within educational systems, critical race theory serves as a powerful tool. Let's engage in thought-provoking conversations about its implications for educational practices and its potential to ignite positive change.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Acknowledging the cultural diversity of learners, culturally responsive teaching emphasizes creating classrooms that embrace and celebrate each student's unique background. Join me in exploring practical applications and success stories that highlight the impact of this approach.

Funds of Knowledge Theorization

By recognizing and tapping into the wealth of knowledge that students bring from their homes and communities, we can create more meaningful and relevant learning experiences. Together, we'll investigate how funds of knowledge theorization can enrich educational practices.

Cosmopolitanism

Cosmopolitan literacies encompass the skills and dispositions necessary to engage thoughtfully and effectively with diverse cultures and global issues, fostering intercultural competence and a sense of global citizenship.

Critical Cosmopolitanism

Critical cosmopolitanism is an approach that emphasizes the need to critically engage with and challenge power structures and inequalities while fostering global interconnectedness and cultural diversity.

Liminality

Navigating the transitional spaces in education, liminality offers insights into the transformative potential of periods of uncertainty and change. Join me in contemplating the liminal spaces within our classrooms and institutions, exploring how they can be harnessed for growth and innovation.

Ontology of Place

Examining the profound connections between identity, culture, and physical spaces, the ontology of place invites us to reconsider the impact of our surroundings on learning. Discover how this perspective can shape our understanding of educational environments.

Ways of Knowing

"Ways of knowing" refers to the various processes, approaches, and epistemologies through which individuals and cultures acquire, understand, and validate knowledge. These can include scientific reasoning, intuition, artistic expression, cultural traditions, and spiritual insights, among others. This concept is often discussed in fields like epistemology, anthropology, and education to explore how different societies and disciplines define and pursue knowledge.

Figured Worlds

Figured worlds are culturally and historically shaped spaces where people learn to see themselves and others as particular kinds of people through shared stories, roles, and social practices.

Passive Agency

Challenging traditional notions of agency, passive agency prompts us to reflect on the subtle yet influential ways individuals exert influence within educational settings. Explore the nuances of passive agency and its implications for teaching and learning.

Third Culture

In a globalized world, the concept of third culture explores the unique perspectives that emerge when individuals navigate multiple cultural influences. Join me in unraveling the potential of third culture in fostering cross-cultural understanding and empathy.

Multimodal Literacy

Multimodal literacy refers to the ability to understand, analyze, and create meaning across different modes of communication, such as text, images, sound, and video. It involves comprehending and composing messages that combine these modes effectively to convey information or express ideas.

Multiliteracies

In an era characterized by diverse modes of communication, multiliteracies push the boundaries of traditional literacy. Let's dive into the evolving landscape of literacies, exploring how educators can prepare students for a world rich in communication modalities.

Bureaucratic Literacies

Unraveling the intricacies of navigating bureaucratic systems within education, this perspective offers insights into the administrative dimensions of teaching. Together, we'll examine how bureaucratic literacies can empower educators to navigate institutional challenges.

Semiotics

Delving into the study of signs and symbols, semiotics provides a lens through which we can analyze the language of education. Join me in deciphering the semiotic codes embedded in educational practices and materials.

Sponsorship

Understanding the role of mentorship and support in educational journeys, sponsorship becomes a crucial aspect of nurturing growth and success. Explore the power dynamics inherent in sponsorship relationships and their impact on educational trajectories.

Affective Economies

Affective economies describe how emotions like desire, fear, or admiration circulate socially and attach to bodies, identities, or symbols, shaping power dynamics and giving certain people or ideas more value or visibility than others.

Nurturing Reflection and Application

This evolving archive of theory-in-practice is an invitation to deepen our questions, to ground ourselves in complexity, and to imagine more just, inclusive, and embodied educational futures. Through upcoming posts, I’ll blend personal experience, literature reviews, and pedagogical experimentation to highlight how these frameworks live in the classroom, in communities, and in our own becoming.

Welcome to Theoretical Threads—a space for critical curiosity, collective sense-making, and the radical hope of lifelong learning.
