Family Interviews

๐ŸŽ™️✨ Voices from My Family: A Project-Based EFL Lesson

This lesson invites students to explore family stories through interviews, helping them build confidence in speaking, listening, and writing — all while deepening their sense of connection and curiosity. ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ

๐ŸŽฏ Project Goal

Students will interview a family member (or guardian/close adult) to learn more about their personal history, values, and memories. They’ll turn that interview into a short profile, poster, or multimedia presentation to share in class.

๐Ÿงญ Lesson Flow: 5 Steps

๐ŸŒŸ Step 1: Kickoff & Language Building

๐ŸŽ“ Goal: Learn key vocabulary and prepare interview questions
๐Ÿง  Focus: Family terms, past tense verbs, interview expressions
๐ŸŽฒ Activities:

  • Create a family word map (e.g., cousin, uncle, niece, in-laws)

  • Explore sentence starters:

    • "What was it like when…?"

    • "Can you tell me about…?"

  • Practice short interviews with classmates
๐Ÿ“Œ Homework: Choose a family member to interview and get their permission ✅

๐ŸŽค Step 2: Interview Skills & Planning

๐ŸŽ“ Goal: Practice how to conduct a respectful, natural interview
๐Ÿ‘‚ Focus: Follow-up questions, active listening, taking notes or recording
๐ŸŽฒ Activities:

  • Practice responding: “Really?” / “How did that feel?” / “Tell me more.”

  • Do a role-play interview (e.g., one student pretends to be a grandparent)

  • Fill out a simple interview plan:

    • Who will I talk to?

    • What will I ask?

    • How will I record it?

๐Ÿ“Œ Homework: Complete your interview (audio, notes, or video) ๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ““

✍️ Step 3: Create the Project

๐ŸŽ“ Goal: Turn the interview into a clear, creative product
๐Ÿง  Focus: Summarizing, organizing, past tense & reported speech
๐ŸŽฒ Activities:

  • Learn to structure a story: Introduction → Main Ideas → Conclusion

  • See examples:

    • A short written profile

    • A poster with photos and captions

    • A slideshow with audio clips

  • Draft your project and share with a peer for feedback ✍️๐Ÿ‘ฅ

๐Ÿ“ข Step 4: Present & Reflect

๐ŸŽ“ Goal: Share your family story with the class
๐ŸŽฒ Activities:

  • Present your story (2–3 minutes) — use visuals, tell a favorite quote or memory ๐ŸŽ™️๐Ÿ“ธ

  • Listeners ask a follow-up question (practice active listening!)

  • End with a reflection:

    • What did you learn about your family?

    • What surprised you?

๐Ÿ“š Language Skills Practiced

๐Ÿงพ Vocabulary: family relationships, life events
๐Ÿ“– Grammar: past simple, past continuous, reported speech
๐Ÿ—ฃ️ Speaking: interviews, presentation, question-asking
✍️ Writing: summaries, captions, profiles

๐ŸŒ Optional Extensions
