🎯 Lesson Plan: Oral Book Reviews (Project-Based)

🔍 Learning Objectives

By the end of this project, learners will be able to:

  1. Summarize the plot, setting, and characters of a chosen book.

  2. Describe key plot milestones in sequence.

  3. Interpret the deeper meaning, values, or social commentary in the story.

  4. Express and support personal opinions about the book.

  5. Use persuasive language to encourage others to read the book.

  6. Produce and present a clear, engaging video or live oral review.


📚 Materials Needed

  • Books or short stories (graded readers or student-chosen texts)

  • Story map / plot diagram worksheets

  • Sample book review videos (YouTube or teacher-recorded)

  • Audio/video recording tools (phones, Flipgrid, PowerPoint video)

  • Rubric for oral presentation

  • Google Slides or Canva (optional, for visual support)


🗓️ Project Timeline & Activities

Day 1: Introduction & Book Selection

  • Warm-Up Discussion: "What makes a book interesting?"

  • Mini-Lesson: Parts of a Book Review (summary, interpretation, opinion, persuasion)

  • Model Viewing: Watch a sample book review video. Discuss what made it effective.

  • Activity: Students choose a book or short story.

  • Homework: Read the first few chapters. Begin filling out a reading journal.


Day 2: Understanding and Analyzing the Book

  • Mini-Lesson: Character, setting, and plot milestones

  • Group Work: Use story map to identify characters, setting, major events

  • Practice Speaking: In pairs, explain your story’s beginning and main characters

  • Homework: Finish reading the book and fill out the story map


Day 3: Interpretation and Values

  • Mini-Lesson: How to interpret meaning and values (themes, morals, author’s message)

  • Discussion Prompts:

    • What is this book really about?

    • What values does it show?

    • What can readers learn from it?

  • Speaking Practice: Small group sharing of interpretations

  • Homework: Write and record a 1-minute reflection on the book’s message


Day 4: Opinion and Persuasion

  • Mini-Lesson: Giving opinions and using persuasive language
    (e.g., I believe... because..., If you enjoy..., you'll love this book.)

  • Activity: Write a persuasive paragraph convincing others to read the book.

  • Practice Activity: Peer “book pitch” in rotating pairs

  • Homework: Finalize script for oral review and prepare visuals (optional)


Day 5: Presentation Day

  • Task: Present oral book reviews (live or recorded)

  • Peer Feedback: Fill out a simple rubric for classmates’ presentations

  • Reflection: What was challenging or fun about this project?

  • 3–5 minute oral book review video or live presentation, including:

    • Summary of the book

    • Description of characters and setting

    • Plot milestones

    • Interpretation of meaning/values
