Lesson Overview

Goal: Students will collaboratively organize a mini multicultural event where they share songs, poems, greetings, or short cultural presentations in different languages (including their own). The event showcases linguistic diversity and raises awareness of cultural traditions.

Session 1: Introduction & Planning

1. Warm-up Discussion (15 min)

  • Teacher shows photos or videos from multicultural festivals.

  • Discussion questions:

    • Have you ever been to a multicultural festival? What did you see/hear?

    • Why is it important to learn about other languages and cultures?

2. Introduce Project (10 min)

  • Explain the Festival of Languages project.

  • Students will work in small groups to prepare a short presentation/performance: a song, poem, greeting, or cultural fact in a language other than English.

3. Brainstorm & Group Formation (20 min)

  • Groups of 3-4 students.

  • Each group chooses or is assigned a language to focus on (can be their own heritage language or a new one).

  • Brainstorm ideas for what to present (song, poem, greeting, cultural info).

  • Teacher provides resources: simple songs/poems/greetings in various languages (printouts, videos, links).

Homework: Groups research their chosen language/culture and begin preparing.

Session 2: Practice & Language Preparation

1. Language Skills Focus (20 min)

  • Teach relevant vocabulary and pronunciation for greetings, poems, or song excerpts.

  • Practice with teacher guidance.

2. Group Work (30 min)

  • Teacher circulates, assists with pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency.

Session 3: Final Rehearsal & Event Setup

1. Run-through Presentations (40 min)

  • Groups perform for each other and give feedback.

  • Teacher helps with final adjustments.

2. Prepare the Event Space (if in person)

  • Decorate classroom with flags, cultural items, or posters.

  • Prepare simple invitations or programs.
