Lesson Plan: Inventions Project

Level

Intermediate (B1-B2)

Time

2-3 sessions (45-60 minutes each)

Objectives

  • Learn and use vocabulary related to inventions and technology

  • Practice asking and answering questions about inventions

  • Develop presentation skills in English

  • Foster teamwork and creativity


Materials

  • Pictures or flashcards of famous inventions (wheel, telephone, light bulb, airplane, computer, smartphone, etc.)

  • Internet access (optional, for research)

  • Poster paper, markers, or digital presentation tools (PowerPoint, Canva, etc.)

  • Worksheet with invention vocabulary and questions


Session 1: Introduction & Vocabulary

Warm-up (10 min)

  • Show pictures of famous inventions.

  • Ask: “What is this?” “Who invented it?” “When was it invented?”

  • Write down student answers and introduce new vocabulary: invention, inventor, to invent, useful, creative, improve, problem, solution, etc.

Vocabulary Activity (15 min)

  • Match inventions to their descriptions or inventors.

  • Practice pronunciation of key words.

Discussion (10 min)

  • Pair students and ask: “What is your favorite invention?” “Why is it important?” “How does it help people?”

Project Introduction (10 min)

  • Explain the project: Students will create their own invention.

  • They will decide what problem it solves, how it works, and present it to the class.


Session 2: Planning the Invention

Brainstorming (15 min)

  • In small groups (3-4 students), brainstorm problems people have.

  • Choose one problem to solve with an invention.

Planning (20 min)

  • Fill out a worksheet:

    • Name of the invention

    • What problem does it solve?

    • How does it work?

    • What materials does it use?

    • Who will use it?

Vocabulary Support

  • Provide useful phrases for describing inventions:

    • “Our invention helps people who…”

    • “It works by…”

    • “It is made of…”

    • “It is different from other inventions because…”


Session 3: Presentations

Prepare (15 min)

  • Students create a poster or digital slides to explain their invention.

  • Practice presenting in groups.

Present (20-30 min)

  • Each group presents their invention.

  • Encourage other students to ask questions.

Feedback & Wrap-up (10 min)

  • Teacher and classmates give positive feedback.

  • Discuss: “Which invention would you like to use?” “Why?”


Extension Ideas

  • Write a short story or an advertisement for the invention.

  • Create a “patent application” form in English.

  • Research a famous inventor and share with the class.
