Essay Poster Project 2

Writing Steps

Folse, Muchmore-Vokoun, & Solomon's Great writing 4: great essays (2010) is a great book if you are teaching a course on writing. This project riffs off of their "Seven Steps."

These steps include:

  1. Choosing a topic
  2. Brainstorming
  3. Outline and Rough Draft
  4. Cleaning up the Rough Draft
  5. Peer Editing
  6. Revising the Draft
  7. Proofing the Final Paper

In our two-week course, I had planned for the students, who have had substantial English language education as well as overseas experiences, to write essays. Since I was given little information about the learners, and was unable to assess the learners or our context prior to the start of class, I relied on previous experiences of teaching essay writing to a variety of English as a foreign language students aged 16 and over.

I chose a core textbook, Great Essays, that could be used during and after our class for a common experience and for self-study purposes.

Since I was unable to know the real writing abilities of my students, I organized the two weeks as follows. Week 1 was to draw out what the students already knew by going through a seven-step writing process. Week 2 was doing activities & practice that would help students with errors identified in the process of Week 1. Week 2 further assists the cognitive process of essay writing fundamentals by revisiting Week 1’s essay and developing it into a poster display of their essay project.

Let’s take a look now at how they were able to produce so much in such a short time.
